Not wishing to pre-empt a reply from John, but technically Gary Lyons would be the person to ask about the Desert Garden.
Whether Gary can generate a list from the database is another question. Probably the person to ask about that would be Sean Lahmeyer. Whether the database is concurrent with what is actually present in the ground is another question. A survey of the entire Desert Garden is underway and almost complete- it should include photographs of all plants. So, to cut a long story short, it may already have been done :-) T |

Thanks Tim,
I figured John would be the best place to start, since he monitoring Xeric World and I don't know Gary, and have only Met Sean once.. Wow, I could imaging what a task it must be to survey the entire garden.... I would just like to catalog as many species here on the website with photo's as possible. I have over a hundred species here at my place, and at least that many more in cultivars, variegates, and hybrids... but I know that the Huntington has a LOT of things I am missing...... Allen |

If Brian reads this thread..... It would also be interesting to know if there is a List of Species in his garden...
It would be cool to have a "checklist' for the These and other Gardens so we could go on an hunt and check them off as they are found.... I hate hearing about a plant at a garden that I missed ![]() ![]() Allen |

Such a thing maybe already underway - have a look here:
http://plantcollections.pathf.com/ I know a list from the Huntington has been incorporated. It's more a question of how up-to-date the information is. T |

In reply to your comment, Allen, we do not have a list of all the Agave species growing at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, but every year I do make a list of all the species that come into flower. Here is the list from last year:
Agave angustifolia A. bracteosa A. celsii var albicans A. celsii var. celsii A. chiapensis A. filifera A. havardiana A. horrida A. lechuguilla A. lophantha (blue form) A. lophantha (green form) A. ocahui A. polianthiflora A. potatorum A. salmiana var. crassispina A. salmiana var. salmiana A. schottii A. sisalana A. striata A. striata ssp. falcata A. tequilana A. victoriae-reginae x lechuguilla A. victoriae-reginae x scabra (2 clones) A. xylonacantha |

Tanks for the great list Brian, that is quite a nice selection. BTW, I was mening to ask you about a plant that Randy Baldwin and I were talking about from the Huntington... The plant is labeled as A. havardiana. I thought I remember Randy telling me that John said the plant might have come from you. It is a fabulous specimen. If it is indeed from your garden, do you know any history on it?

The plant pictured is not from RBG; our plants have significantly wider leaves than this. However, the pictured plant is certainly an attractive one. The narrowness of its leaves reminds me more of A. neomexicana than A. havardiana, but no doubt there are wide-leaved clones of neomexicana and narrow-leaved ones of havardiana; these 2 species and parryi all seem very close. Our plant flowered last year, and I can send seed if you would like some (note that I do not know if it was self-pollinated or if it crossed with another Agave or Agaves); I have already sent some of the seed to Randy, since he was interested in growing it.
If you explain how to insert a photo, I can send a picture. |

Thanks Brian! I will shoot you a PM on the seed, thanks for the offer!
I made a tutorial here on how to add photo's to your personal gallery and/or insert them into a thread.... If you have any troubles, feel free to let me know. It might look complicated, but it is pretty straight forward and worth the learning curve. I am sure I am not the only one who would enjoy some teasers from your great garden! Cheers, Allen |

Allen,
I added an album and titled it "Agaves at RBG", then went to select and copy a photo, but was not able to paste the photo into the album, as I do when adding a photo to an email. Can you tell me what I need to do? |
|
||||
|
Hello Brian,
Ok.... once you have created the album, you need to open the album by clicking on the link on your album page. Once on the album page, you need to click the link "Upload Pictures" .... On this page, you will see ten boxes.. click the "Browse" button to locate the photo's you want on your computer. Once you have selected them, click the "upload pictures" link at the bottom of the page... Thanks for the effort! I am sure there are others who have the same questions about how to upload, so this should help them also.... Let me know if you are able to follow.... sometimes I am not the best at directions! Excellent.
I will fix the photo for you... unfortunately you need to rotate it and save it in the right rotation before you upload it. I will fix it this evening and give you more details on how to add it to your post once it is in your album... Cheers! Allen |

I see you added some new photo's and managed to turn and re upload the havardiana...
I searched my email trash and found the original correspondence with Randy on the Huntington plant and I didn't get it right.... The plant in the photo at the Huntington was labeled as a selection of Agave deserti. ![]() The confusion arises from Randy saying that there was a group of plants labeled as A. deserti at RBG, which you later told him was a form of A. havardiana... photo above and below by Randy Baldwin. ![]() So the specimen of A. deserti is similar to the spineless form we found at Borrego Springs.... The Huntington plant seems more blue, while the form we found shows banding..... Thanks for sharing the photos! Allen |
