Here are some habitat photos of Agave horrida ssp. perotensis, all taken at the same locality (a lava flow a few km north of Perote, Veracruz). It is interesting to note the variation in the plants; for example in the color of the spine on the new leaves. This ranges from chocolate (as in plant 001) to orange-brown (as on plant 003) to a dark purplish-brown (plant 011). Plant 006 doesn’t have much in the way of spine color, but it has gnarly teeth bending this way and that, plus wiggly end spines, and it looks almost like a utahensis wanna-be! Plant 007 has very few teeth and a yellow-green color, while plant 001 is the bluest.
Happy New Year!
