I have planted Aloe striata head cuttings with good results. I have also found that if I core out the apical meristem, it does produce offsets. If you are losing a plant to root rot, then you have nothing to lose. Just make the cut as high up the stem as possible above the rot and right under the base leaves. Place on barely damp perlite/sand mix and see what happens. I have had mixed results using a rooting hormone. The balance between growth and rot is a fine line. Good luck! BTW. The Big Box stores have been selling tons of Aloe striata in a short 1 gallon size for 5.00 around here, and I am sure wherever the Altman contracts are, the plants are sure to follow.
