Why are they called "Hen and Chicks?"

Hen and chicks is a common name used for Sempervivum (& sometimes Echeveria) for the way the new rosettes grow around the main rosette, like chicks around their mother hen.

Many also include the genus Jovibarba as "Hen & Chicks" ! We have nearly 50 different species/cultivars (Sempervivum & Jovibarba) with most very hardy here in our south-central michigan USDA zone 5 area.

Common names are never reliable! In South Africa the genus Chlorophytum is known as "Hen and Chickens"......
