General Description of Cultivar
This is not a test, this is a real attempt to use the Cultivar registration feature at Xeric World and use the plant Agave 'Royal Spine' for the first entry. This plant is also my first release. The next step is to get comments and feedback from XericWorld members on the application...... then it will be published in the Online Registry, and be published in print on a semi annual basis.

Ok Folks,

I thought I would work on getting this registration process rolling. I already found a few bugs to work on, but the process is ready to be open for business and can get dialed in with feedback from applicants.

The process is simple..... Fill out the applications found in the "Forms" section of the menu bar ( I will change this to Plant Registry ). Then fill out the application. Once you fill it out, the software will use your form to create a new thread. Then, with the feedback of other members, the application will be reviewed, and any missing components will be addressed until the consensus is that it is complete.

Once complete, the title of the thread will be changed to the cultivar name, an it will be then officially entered in the Registry.

Then...... we will somehow publish, or get published, on a semi annual basis, these Registry applications in print to fulfill the publication requirements of Plant Cultivar Registration.

I await your feedback on the first entry!

Allen

I just noticed that the form is repeating it's self in the description boxes..... I will have to work on that tonight.

For the proof of propagation, it might be worth stating the mechanism - offsets, TC, etc.

Hi Tim,

Yeah, good suggestion. I also realized I didn't give a general size description for the plant.... having the thread created for feedback should really work well, then once we have a few good ones complete, they will can serve as examples... The applicant can go back and edit the application based on the feedback until it is ready... should work pretty good

Will this process account for the discovery and registry of naturally occurring hybrids, like Agave 'Sharkskin'?

Hi Matt,

I don't see why this would be any different than registering a cultivated hybrid as long as someone takes the time to register the plant and propagate it. Agave celsii 'Nova' would be another good example..... This will be an evolving project here and we can make it what we want......

The hybrid/not hybrid part is a little confusing. I think there should be two separate sections. One section should be for non-hybrids, listing Genus, species. One section for hybrids, listing Genus, species for pollen parent and Genus, species for seed parent.

Hi Greg,

Ok, I am not sure if you have seen that there are actually three categories. I pretty much swiped the categories from the bromeliad society cultivar registration site, though I am myself a little confused by the difference between a sport cultivar and species cultivar. The Hybrid Cultivar is the one I used to do the Agave 'Royal Spine" application. It asks the "If Hybrid" and If not Hybrid" question to document the fact that the parent's of the new hybrid could be hybrids themselves. I think this might be part of what is confusing you. Let me know.....

For example, I have some hybrid seedlings here of Agave celsii 'Nova' which is potatorum x celsii, crossed with colorata. I also have Agave 'Blue Glow' crossed with colorata,

Let me know if that clears it up or I am not addressing your issue.

Allen

Hi Allen,

That does clarify the issue. Maybe you could amend the form to reflect that? I'd have to think about it.

Yeah, I will work on making it more clear....

So what is the difference between a Species Cultivar and a Sport Cultivar? As the Bromeliad society has made them separate categories.

Is a Species Cultivar a seed selection, vs. a Sport Cultivar being an offset or clone of an individual?

Allen

My guess is that a species cultivar is a selection from the wild or from seed grown plants while a sport cultivar might be something like a variegate, a crest or a chimera.

Hi Greg,

I thought that would be cut and dry.... until I tried to figure out where a variegate from seed would fit
