I have an Aloe Striata (about 12x12in), and had an inquisitve question I hope someone can answer. As Aloe Striata is a solitary aloe, it does not offset. I was wondering, if by chance something such as root rot were to occur, does this plant root when you "behead" it? From this I refer to chopping a section (top half) of the plant and attempting to root it?
Thanks for any responses!

Does anybody have any experience with this plant?

It doesn't seem from what I've read that this plant goes dormant at any time in the year. Mine is loosing its leaves and although there are some decent leaves on this it should look lush.

There are no pests on this that I can see and it's not rotting. I don't believe I'm over or under watering it, about once a week.

It's getting 6-8 hours of light under shade cloth per day and the weather has been cooler here in the central valley in California, 90's and even the 80's.

I know this plant is a cultivar and that it is originally from Hawaii...

Any suggestions...

i pulled this, what i assume to be agave tequilana from a large colony out in Santa Barbara a few months back, i figured it would be like most agaves and be fine out of the soil for awhile. Well after a day or 2 it started showing this damage....so i get it home and put it in the ground, and it seems the new growth is still dying off rather quickly. Is this normal ? Is it diseased ? Here are some pics, any help is appreciated.

I had the good fortune to travel to Madagascar to see this plant and dragged Andrew Hankey with me. Actually I am not sure who was dragging who but it was a great time! I wrote an article in the CSSA journal about this Aloe and the strange plant we found along the way ~ Perrierosedum.

So to reason for this post, when I searched the internet for info on this species ~ up comes several pictures of plants that are not this species and a reference to my article that can be read if you purchase a copy....and not even in the original publication! Of course completely legal you know public domain and all. but.....

I wanted to change that so I am posting several pictures and I will also scan and post the article.

I understand the confusion here as Aloe capitata (which has been pictured as this species) is growing at the base of the mountain and so is A. macroclada. Both of these species are wide spread in Madagascar. It is understandable that people get to this park and see one of these species and presume it to be andringitrensis it happens often. Well maybe not that often given it is in Madagascar but.... To see this plant, one only needs to hike to the top 8 to 9 miles up and another 8 to 9 miles back!

I have seen seed offered but everything I have purchased and grown has either not grown at all or not been true to the description. I would be suspect unless it matched Reynolds or it had pedagree.

It is a very distinct species and could not be easily confused with capitata.....that is to say if your plant looks like capitata, it likely is!

A. andringitrensis is a very cool plant and hopefully it will become available in time. I suspect it will do well in northern california as it is from high elevation and it gets pretty cool there at 7 to 8,000 ft ele. So far it has grown fine but only one clone has flowered for me. I will keep you posted.

Hi all,

It looks like (after almost a year working on it!) that I'll be getting my house leased out, and now I'll probably moving from the San Fernando Valley in Southern California to the Eastside area in Washington State some time this fall. It's something I've always wanted to do, but now I'm faced with the question of how to deal with my plant collection! I plan to sell off/give away some of the plants and keep only the ones I can't bear to part with... though I have a feeling that will still end up to be most of them. I've already narrowed things down to mostly agaves and haworthias plus a few aloes.

One major problem is I won't have a greenhouse for a while, and though I can store the plants indoors over the winter I don't know if this will work for all of them. Any advice? :(

Ken
