Default Brunsvigia josephinae first bloom

A lot of virgin bulbs all of a sudden! Actually, this has bloomed before, just not on this continent.

Allen, let's swap pollen! This plant has already donated to my Boophone.

So you think Crinum might work? Interesting.. That would be an interesting cross to say the least! I will go cut off some anthers after I go to the refrigerator and get me a beer and a chunk of Stilton Cheese.

My A. belladonna are blooming right now... about six weeks earlier than in the past.... if these bulbs are speaking to us, I think we are going to have an early Fall around here...... I wonder what is happening over at Ken's place...

I think it's worth a try. I try everything with everything (within families at least). Will find the Puya seed for you too. I'll send anthers in a tic-tac box.

WHOA! Very early, Tim. Congratulations! I've tried Bruns. josephinae pollen on Boophone without success ... only small, deformed, mis-colored seeds which either did not germinate or did so and immediately died. Hope you have better luck ... keep us posted!

Thanks Ken. If they look bad I'll take them into the lab (if I'm allowed).

It shouldn'tstop you.

Still trying to work out if I have a Hymenocallis x Ammocharis. The Hymenocallis never set seed, but I got one with pollen from A. coranica ...

I was at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden today and their Brunsvigia josephinae haven't yet emerged.

Tim,

Which species of Hymenocallis did you use? Can you get a flow cytometry determination of nuclear DNA content? Or a karyotype? I tend to be skeptical of very wide intergeneric crosses, and some Hymeno species seem to be apomictic.

No idea re. the species. I'll just let it flower then discard if it turns out to be just a Hymenocallis ...

I'm hoping it will arrive today. Still plenty of fresh flowers here.
