Default My first Bulb bloom!

I started collecting South African Bulbs two years ago and have really enjoyed learning about them. I have been really busy lately, and imagine my surprise when I walked out in the yard and found this Boophane disticha in full bloom! another couple days and I would have missed it. This is a celebration for me, as it is the first bulb I have had bloom. This is a bulb I have only had for about 8 months and it was imported from South Africa (Penrock), so I was pretty shocked that it settled in and bloomed so quickly.. I have been told by most that they don't like to move at all and I should expect years before anything blooms...

Anyways, I though I would share this triumph of sorts.

Allen

Nice one Allen,

Sometimes I wonder why I've transferred from South Africa to Australia (only when I see photos like this). Certainly is your triumph!

Congrats, Allen!

I had one pop up too ... to my surprise, as this bulb is only 4 years old, in the ground only the last two. So far ... its 4 siblings of the same age have not produced any scapes. With the heat earlier this week ... the bloom is not lasting long at all. Tried using some frozen pollen on it ... we shall see what happens.

If you want to come up and swap some pollen this weekend, I will be around.... you can show me how to pollinate my plant and take home some fresh pollen to try on yours!

Hey Allen ...

I should have saved/frozen some of this one's pollen, but I think a bit too late for this one. The heat last week did a number on the bloom ... here it is last Monday ...

I really recommend saving the pollen, even though I've fallen down on this responsibility lately. Boophone are self sterile.

Wow, beautiful bulbs!
If any of you manage to get seeds I'll be delighted to exchange!
