Default Beaucarnea recurvata? variegated at Quail

Saw this at Quail Gardens last week... sorry it was so sunny I didn't get any really good photos of it... has very different variegation from all the other variegated BEaucarneas, not to mention it has a nice, fat base, and leaves thicker and stiffer... sure looks and feels like recurvata... think it is?

Wow, that is a cool one. Maybe Spath can jump in and tell us where that one came from. I was at the garden just a few weeks ago and didn't see it...

Lab-cultured clone (that is most common) came from Lab in Netherlands.

I've not seen any of the the 'common' one in person with anything like a caudex. I saw an image of one of the common ones that had a normal caudex on the site of the broker who imported them from the Netherland lab. Most I've seen up close appear with normal branch-look to the base, instead of the normal caudex.

The wholesale broker who was importing them from Fla had images of one similar to the Quail Garden imaged-plant. At that time the plant like the one in this image wasn't being imported (2005).

The Quail plant is definitely not the same plant as the named cultivar that has been cloned and available as of late. The variegation on the Quail plant is not marginated like the common one. It would be interesting to know where that plant came from if Spath has records. I have not seen anything like it, and by the size of it, it is many years old..

Cheers, Allen

Allen,
True. as indicated in the last sentence of my post. There was an image that was much like the one at Quail that was not marginata. I have several of the marginatas about 7-8 years old. None quite as nice as Geoff's (Palm Bob's) .

In the spirit of the question -- as to the possible source... were I interested and looking to find one, I wouldn't rule out the source in the Netherlands. The imaged variegate (non-marginata) is plenty unusual too my limited knowledge.

I believe Geoff also has marginata version. I've seen images of it and it is a well-grown and has larger trunk than any I've seen.

Bob
